                   Materials List for Painting Classes

Materials list:

This list is by no means exactly what every artist will need to create, but this is a good place to start while being on the same page.   Get what you can afford, or bring what you have, and we can work from there.  However, these are the aterials I recommend for to get the most from my classes.

Selection of Paints (recommended colors):

*Cadmium Red Lt.            Cadmium Red Deep                 Quinacridone Rose

Cadmium Yellow Lt.         *Cadmium Lemon                    *Cadmium Orange

Cobalt Blue                      *Permanent Green Lt               *Turquoise Blue or Thalo BlueGreen

Ultramarine Blue               *Ultramarine Violet                   Titanium White

**Yellow Ochre                **Ivory Black                         **Burnt Sienna

*Helpful for wider range of expressive mixing            **Optional Colors

The higher grades of artist quality paint will offer a higher pigment load and will offer a cleaner, sharper and more personal range of mixed color.  That said, we cannot all justify the expense of that quality.  Buy the highest quality you can justify and we will work toward the higher grades as that becomes more important to each artist.

Selection of Brushes:

¼” ½” ¾” hog bristle brushes

Same sized soft imitation sable type brushes

Small and medium round soft imitation sable brushes

More specific brushes can be discussed as needed.

Winsor Newton Liquin Medium

Odorless Paint Thinner   Winsor Newton Art Gel

Trowel shaped palette knife

16x20 or 18x24 basic pre-stretched canvas

(Higher quality canvas should be used as work become less academic and more personal).

At least a 12x16 wooden palette

Soft Vine Charcoal / Chamois Cloth

Early classes will focus on mixing and applying color in a manner that will allow you to control, clear, crisp, value and color.  We will explore color theory, value studies, and how to explore the range of possibilities within a color choice.  As we move along we will create paintings that deal with specific color relationships. leading toward a more personal expression in your painting style.

I work with the artists at Riverside Art in Somerset, Ma.   They have been meeting student and professional artist’s needs since 1960 or so.  They are familiar with my list and can answer all of your questions.  They can answer your questions and will help you fill your specific requirements at a discounted price.
