My pencil paintings are essentially fully realized large format drawings that require 20 t0 80 hours of rather intense explorations of value, line, and narrative. Created primarily graphite pencil on toned paper. I will generally use gray or cream tones printmakers paper or even a mounted natural wood panel with a 4b or 8b graphite pencil. This combination allows me to create a softer feel to my work. Much of this work is the preliminary foundation for a painting or series of paintings. Many are allowed to stand as complete ideas.
